here are some simple bite-sized pieces of information about El Nino from the website, as well.
- El Nino is part of a interannual cycle called ENSO (El Nino, Southern Oscillation) which occures in the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean. El Nino is the warm part of this cycle.
- El Nino occurs once every 3 to 7 years.
- Most El Nino events peak in late December. This is how the event was named. "El Nino" is Spanish for the boy child. It was named when Peruvian fisherman began referring to the El Nino phenomenon as the "Christ Child".
- El Nino causes floods, hurricanes, droughts, tornados and horrible weather.
